Gut & Liver Health

It is my firm belief, based on research and experience, that any health condition can be greatly improved by enhancing gut and liver health.

For a long time now modern medicine has considered health imbalance to be a localised problem. Asthma is considered a lung problem, arthritis a joint problem, allergies are blamed on an immune imbalance and if you are overweight there must be a problem with your metabolism. As a result disease is often only treated in a localised way. However, there is growing evidence that treating the body in this compartmentalised way is not working and that we should look at the body as one whole organism and treat it accordingly. In other words, symptoms appearing in one part of the body may be occurring as a result of imbalances or disease in a completely different part of the body. If we are to successfully help the body-overcome disease then we must treat it as a whole.

Everything is connected but central to the body’s health are the liver and the gut. Nowhere is human science currently more cutting edge than with regards to these organs. We are realising that they are crucial to your health and wellbeing. If your skin is bad, you have arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, allergies, asthma, food intolerances, an inability to lose weight or even poor memory and diminished mental health then there is strong evidence that these things can be attributed to poor liver and gut health.

As a health practitioner I have seen many clients with many varied symptoms and in almost 100 percent of these cases poor liver and gut health is a driving factor of the client’s condition. I firmly believe that nearly everyone living in the Western world has compromised liver and gut health of one kind or another (due to stress, antibiotic use, overload of toxins, fungi or bacterial overgrowth, poor diet and alcohol) and that they are at the root of a person’s chronic symptoms.

I believe that by improving the health of their liver and gut, people can relieve symptoms associated with a myriad of health issues. Imagine suffering the chronic pain of fibromyalgia and being told that it is related to poor liver and gut function. It sounds far fetched but a lot of people have had great success relieving the symptoms of this debilitating disease by addressing gut imbalance, reducing the liver’s workload and helping it to function efficiently.

Normalising gut function is one of the most important things I do for my clients and somewhat of a specialism at my clinic. Over the last few years I have developed a gut restoration programme involving dietary changes and supplementation known as the ‘5 R gut turn around’ (remove, repair, restore, reinoculate and retain). Whether you are suffering from acne or arthritis, dermatitis or depression and just about every other condition between, the results of this simple approach to restoring health are nothing short of remarkable.


Alongside the gut turn around it is always essential that you undertake a period of detoxification (reducing exposure to toxins and optimising detoxification nutrient intake) in order to ensure your liver is functioning properly. Your liver carries out hundreds of different functions in the body from making and storing vitamins and minerals to creating hormones and bile. However, one of its most important functions is detoxifying toxins and other substances that can be very harmful to the body. The liver is an extremely clever, complex and resilient organ but in the modern world it can become overwhelmed. If the liver can’t cope with everything you throw at it then it has no option but to leak damaging substances into your lymph and even directly in to your blood with potentially disastrous consequences. I believe that everyone in the Western world has compromised liver function to some degree. If you suffer from, well just about any health complaint then sub-optimal liver function is likely to be one of the driving factors. However, all is not lost, with the right nutritional and lifestyle choices you can restore liver function and improve your health.
